Despite its benefits, SAF’s global production is minuscule, representing just 0.03% of total fuel use. The aviation industry needs to ramp up SAF production to 449 billion liters to meet its goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This requires significant incentives and long-term policies to encourage SAF use.

Case Studies: Ireland and Dubai

Ireland’s ambitious offshore wind power plans could pave the way for SAF production from around 2030. However, significant progress is needed to develop SAF at scale. The potential lies in synthetic e-fuels, which are made with captured carbon and green hydrogen. In Dubai, Emirates has announced an agreement with Shell Aviation for the supply of over 300,000 gallons of blended SAF, marking a significant step in its environmental strategy. This collaboration includes the use of the Avelia platform for tracking SAF delivery and its environmental impact.

The widespread adoption of SAF faces several challenges, including limited supply, high production costs, and the need for more significant technological advancements. However, the future outlook is promising as the industry works towards increasing SAF production and efficiency, moving closer to the goal of net-zero emissions.
